Jeanette’s Encounter With A U-haul

Jeanette and the rest of the family had to move and Rex rented a U-Haul.  He told the kids to get in the back of the U-Haul, instead of sitting in the front.  When it got dark, the back doors opened and nobody noticed the door was open. The kids were in the back and they could have fallen out.  They were also holding a newborn sibling.
Nowadays, if someone is in a car with no seat belt you will get fined. The thought of somebody’s dad making their kids sit in the back of a U-Haul with a baby and the back doors open while driving is insane.

Jeanette's Eats Ham with Maggots

How gross would it be to eat maggots? Well Jeanette and her family had to eat ham filled with maggots because their mother couldn’t afford to feed her fresh meat.
I’m surprised that Jeanette and her siblings didn’t get sick when they ate the ham.
If I had seen that ham, I would be sick to my stomach.  For Jeanette and her siblings to eat the rotten ham is even worse.
It is sad that they lived in such poverty.  I feel like my life is pretty good when I read this book

Jeanette's Fall

When the family was going to Vegas they were in the car and suddenly there was a sharp turn and Jeanette went flying out of the car.  She fell down into a ditch and she all bloody and had wind knocked out of her.  She didn’t cry because she was to stunned.  Her parents didn’t come right back for her because they didn’t even know that she had flown out of the car.
I feel that this is another example of horrible parenting.  They are not protecting their children.  These kids were not treated well and it is amazing they survived.

Jeanette's accident

When Jeanette was 3 years old she was cooking hotdogs and her dress caught on fire and she had to yell for her mother to help her. I find it really bad for Jeanette to be cooking at this age because I’m 17 and I hardly have to cook for myself. When I was younger my mom wouldn’t let me even touch the stove. I think that is what being a parent is about: Protecting your children.
When Jeanette got to the hospital she loved it there because she got taken care of very well. It was different than what she was used to – people cared for her.  Unfortunately, her dad took her out the hospital when they were still trying to treat her.
